Trump wants to send troops to Chicago, Mayor refuses to cooperate

The mayor of Chicago, the third-largest city of the United States, signed an executive order on August 30, expressing "refusal to cooperate" with the Trump administration's plans to deploy large numbers of federal law enforcement personnel and the National Guard in the city.

Chicago Mayor and Democrat Brandon Johnson said the executive order showed that the Chicago City Police Department would not cooperate with the Federal National Guard and other law enforcement operations in the city, including patrol, traffic blocking and setting up checkpoints.

At a press conference where the executive order was signed and issued, Johnson said that the executive order aims to "provide practical and clear guidance" to city department staff and all Chicago citizens and prepare the city to "fight against tyranny."

After protests broke out in the largest city of California, Los Angeles, in June, protesting federal law enforcers in the local mass search for illegal immigrants, President Trump sent National Guard and Marine Corps personnel to the city, then in early August deployed the National Guard to the capital Washington in the name of combating crime, and once announced that the federal "take over" the Washington Police Department.

The actions sparked strong discontent among people in the area and Democrats. However, Trump threatened to move forward with similar military deployments to more Democratic cities, citing "fighting crime." He said on Aug. 25 that he could "send troops" to Chicago and "they need help."

Chicago’s Illinois governor, Democrat Pritzker, then shouted to Trump, “Don’t step on Chicago, you are neither welcomed nor needed here.”Pritzk said that the Trump administration has no right to send troops to the state without the state’s request for federal intervention, and if the federal government decides to send troops, the state government will initiate a lawsuit to prevent it.

The Trump administration has not yet disclosed the plan to send troops to Chicago. The Associated Press quoted two anonymous U.S. officials on August 30 as reporting that the operation could take place no earlier than September 5 and would last about 30 days.

Johnson said that Chicago has received reliable information that law enforcement officers and soldiers sent by the federal government may arrive within "a few days". He stressed that these people were ordered by the federal government, but "I will not accept the order of the federal government" and will seek any feasible legal means to confront them. "If necessary, we will go to court".

Against the Chicago mayor’s response, White House spokesman Abigail Jackson issued a statement on August 30 accusing Democrats of trying to turn “crime-fighting” into a party dispute if these Democrats concentrated on controlling crime in their respective cities rather than propaganda and criticising the president, their communities would become much safer.”

On the same day, Trump posted on the "Real Social" platform criticizing Illinois Governor Pritzker for being "weak and pathetic", saying that "six people were killed and 24 people were shot in Chicago last week", but the other party claimed that "there is no need for help in crime prevention". Trump threatened again: "He'd better get things done quickly, or we're coming!"

Reuters pointed out that in the past, the federal government has deployed National Guard troops to Chicago, but with the cooperation of municipal authorities. Under U.S. law, the president's authority to send troops to local areas is limited, but the deployment of federal law enforcement personnel such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement is not.
