Attack on oil field in southern Sudan kills casualties

On the evening of August 30 local time, the Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement saying that the Heglig oil field in South Kordofan State in the southern part of the country had been attacked many times in recent days, causing casualties.

The statement condemned several attacks by the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces on the infrastructure of the Heglig oil field, which seriously threatened the oil exports of the field. Due to security concerns, the Sudanese government may withdraw staff and suspend operations.

The operator of Heglig Oilfield issued a statement on the same day, saying that the oil field and its nearby airports suffered two drone attacks in the past week, killing five people and injuring seven others.

Heglig Oilfield is one of the important oil fields in southern Sudan, producing about 20,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Regarding the attack on the oil field, the Rapid Support Forces have not yet responded.

On April 15, 2023, an armed conflict broke out between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Force in the capital Khartoum, and the fighting subsequently spread to other areas. The armed conflict that lasted for more than two years has killed nearly 30,000 people and displaced more than 12 million people. (General reporter Zhao Yuanfang)
