Indonesian President cancels his visit to Beijing to see the military parade and apologizes: Riots spread and tensions in the capital

This international commentary analyses the situation in Indonesia.

Indonesia, the largest country in Southeast Asia and the largest Muslim country in the world, has experienced rapid economic development in recent years, and people's self-esteem and sense of gain have become stronger and stronger. However, a large number of political and social problems have also been exposed with economic development, which is one thunder after another on Indonesia's way forward.

In the past few days, a rainbow has exploded.

The main reason was that people learned that the welfare of Indonesian MPs was too good, which sparked widespread anger.

According to local media, 580 MPs can receive about $3,000 a month in housing subsidies and other income in addition to their salaries. This is almost 10 times the minimum wage in the capital Jakarta.

At present, young people in Indonesia are experiencing rising living costs and taxes, and many people are worried about finding jobs. Of course, they are very unconvinced when they see this news. So since the beginning of this week, there have been protests from the bottom people in Jakarta. The police cracked down hard on this.

The protest became more violent when a 21-year-old takeaway brother was hit and killed by a police car, which triggered a larger protest and began to appear extreme violence.

Clashes between police and protesters have erupted in several cities in Indonesia, including in the eastern parts of Papua, such as Mumbai, Soro, Yizhou, Magran, Bengaluru, Pekanbaru and Manukwari, where protesters set fire to a regional parliamentary building and police arrested 1,000 people in Jakarta.

Bali, a popular tourist destination, joined in, as hundreds of food delivery workers and students protested police brutality and called for reform of the judicial system.

In this context, Indonesian President Prabowo made an urgent decision.

On August 31st, he announced that he would cancel the military parade in Beijing.

The President apologized to the Chinese government for not being invited to attend the event and hoped to continue to directly monitor the development of the situation in Indonesia and find the best solution.

The Indonesian government also criticized social media for spreading massive amounts of false information, asking them to be censored. In recent days, several well-known social media and video apps have suspended some of the live broadcast functions in Indonesia to meet the needs of the Indonesian government.
