Palestinian Presidential Office urges U.S. government to revoke Palestinian president's refusal to sign

The Palestinian Presidential Office said on August 30, urging the U.S. government to revoke the decision made yesterday to refuse to issue visas to Pakistani President Abbas and Pakistani officials.

Nabil Abu Roudainai, a spokesperson for the Palestinian presidential palace, told The Associated Press on the same day that the Palestinians "call on the U.S. government to reverse this decision. This move will only increase tensions and lead to escalation." Mr. Roudainai said the Palestinians were in contact with Arab and other countries and "this effort will continue uninterrupted."

Rouhani urged other countries, especially those organising a high-level conference on the theme of the “Two-Country Programme” during the UN General Assembly, to pressure the U.S. government to change its approach. The high-level conference will be held on September 22 and jointly chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, with Abbas planned to participate.

Rudeney also urged Israel to end its military offensive on the Gaza Strip and stop its escalation operations on the West Bank, saying these practices would not help to solve the Israeli problem.

The U.S. State Department issued a statement on the 29th saying that Secretary of State Rubio ordered the denial of visa applications or revocation of visas by some Palestinian officials, except for those of the Permanent Mission of the Palestinian National Authority to the United Nations. The statement accused the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Palestinian National Authority of "undermining the prospects for peace." The United States made the above decision out of "national security interests."

The U.S. Department of Foreign Affairs has refused to sign a notice to Palestinian officials.

United Nations Secretary-General spokeswoman Stefan Diarrick said the United Nations will consult with the U.S. State Department under the UN Headquarters Agreement signed by both sides, saying: “It is important that all UN member states and observers can attend the meeting.”

Israeli Foreign Minister Saleh welcomed the U.S. decision and thanked the Trump administration for “taking bold steps and backing Israel again.”

European officials on Monday criticized the U.S. government’s refusal to issue visas to Palestinian officials such as Palestinian President Abbas, who are preparing to travel to New York to attend the UN General Assembly, saying it was “unacceptable.”

According to Reuters, French Foreign Minister Barrow said at an EU meeting in Copenhagen, Danish that attending the UN General Assembly "should not be restricted in any way". Spanish Foreign Minister Alvarez, who also attended the EU meeting, said that the US approach was "unacceptable". Irish Foreign Minister Harris said that the EU should protest to the US in the "strongest terms".

Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez issued a statement saying that the U.S. government's approach was "unfair" and that "Palestine has the right to speak at the United Nations and all international conferences." He has expressed Spain's support to Abbas.

The United Kingdom, France, Australia and Canada are expected to officially recognize the State of Palestine at a high-level meeting on September 22. Recently, several Western countries have announced that they will recognize the State of Palestine, and Israel’s continued military operations in the Gaza Strip and the continued expansion of settlement construction on the West Bank have sparked international anger and discontent.

After the current round of Palestinian-Israeli conflict broke out in October 2023, Israel was widely condemned by the international community for its military operations in the Gaza Strip, which caused a large number of Palestinian casualties and serious humanitarian disasters. Its main ally, the United States, has been providing political and military support. (Reporter Deng Xianlai, Hui Xiaoshuang, Wang Yijun)
