Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, August 30th-EU member states are scheduled to hold an informal meeting of foreign ministers in Copenhagen, Denmark, on the 30th to discuss EU policy towards Israel. Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Alvarez said on the 29th that he would propose that the European Union break the Israeli blockade, solve the famine problem in the Gaza Strip and expand sanctions against Israel.

Relevant United Nations agencies released a report on the 22nd saying that more than 500,000 people in the Gaza Strip are falling into famine. In an interview with media reporters this week, European Commissioner Hajiya Rabib, who is in charge of emergency preparedness, crisis management and equality, called on EU member states to coordinate their positions and speak in a unified voice on the situation in Gaza. According to a Reuters report on the 29th, there are differences within the EU, and it may be difficult to reach consensus at the foreign ministers 'meeting held on the 30th.

According to several European diplomats, countries such as France, the Netherlands, Spain and Ireland support increasing economic pressure on Israel, while countries such as Germany and Italy do not support it for the time being.

Alvarez said on social media platform X on Friday that he would present at an informal meeting of foreign ministers the EU’s plan to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza, an artificial famine, and an Israeli blockade that threatens the lives of thousands of Gaza residents, including infants and children.

Alvarez said Spain’s proposals include a full ban on EU member states selling weapons to Israel and providing financial support to the Palestinian authorities to avoid economic blockade. In addition, several European countries will issue a joint statement strongly condemning Israel’s recent military operations in the Gaza Strip and plans to take over Gaza City.

The latest figures from Gaza's health department show that since the current round of Israeli-Palestinian conflict broke out in October 2023, Israel's military operations in Gaza have killed 63,000 people. (Bao Xuelin)
