On August 29, local time, UN Secretary-General Guterres issued a statement through a spokesman on the situation in Sudan, calling on the parties to the conflict in Sudan to immediately cease the fire in the capital city of northern Darfur and its surrounding areas.
The Secretary-General is deeply alarmed by the continued attacks by the Sudanese Rapid Support Forces on the city of El Fasher and the resulting civilian casualties, calling their actions a serious violation of international humanitarian law.Mr Guterres urged the parties to the conflict in Sudan to take immediate ceasefire and take measures to protect civilians, and to ensure the safe, unhindered and continued access of civilians to Fashir and humanitarian aid.
The city of El Fasher was hit by a large-scale shelling on the 27th. The Sudanese civilian organization "Sudan Doctors Network" said that the shelling was carried out by the rapid support forces, killing 24 civilians and wounding 55 others.
On April 15, 2023, Sudanese armed forces and rapid support forces broke out in the capital Khartoum, after which the war spread to other regions. The armed conflict, which lasted for more than two years, has killed 30,000 people and displaced more than 12 million people. Darfur is one of the main battlefields of the conflict, the region is governed by five central states, and the other four states have been controlled by rapidly supporting forces in addition to North Darfur. Since May 2024, the two sides of the conflict have been engaged in a continuous struggle to control the city of Fashir.
