The new European Union.
Starting from the 2024/25 season, the European Union will change from the original group stage to a 36-team league stage, with each team playing these eight games against eight different teams.
The league stage wins a game of 3 minutes, 1 point, and after 8 rounds 36 teams score the top 8 teams automatically advance to the top 16.
The team ranked 9-24 takes two rounds of additions, the winner receives an additional eight promotion seats; the team ranked 25-36 is directly eliminated.
As the seeded team, the 9th-16th team will face the 17th-24th team for two rounds, and the second round will be played at the home of the seeded team. The winner advances to the round of 16.
The drawing rules.
To identify these eight different opponents, teams will be assigned to four levels based on club coefficients. Each team will draw 2 opponents from each level, one of which will be a home game and the other will be an away game. In the league stage, each team cannot play against teams in the same association (i.e.,"same country avoidance"). At most, they can only be drawn to two other teams in the same association.
lottery process
The draw will start with a team.
1) From the 9 teams in the first gear, manually select a team.
2) The software automatically selects 2 teams in each gear as the team's opponents in the first, second, third and fourth gears (while following the "principles" above);
3) The software automatically determines home and away games, with one host and one guest for each game;
In this process, eight opponents are allocated to all nine teams in a row, starting with one team. Second, Third, and Four teams continue this process until all teams are allocated to eight opponents. UEFA says the software will guarantee complete randomness within the prescribed drawing principles, while ensuring the drawing of all teams can be completed smoothly.
At the end of the draw, all teams will know their eight opponents, but the specific schedule, match date and kick-off time will be formulated later and announced on August 31st to ensure that there is no conflict with the Champions League and European League schedules.
